The goal of the Grants for Exploratory Academic Research Program (GEAR) is to encourage faculty researchers at the three SC comprehensive research universities (CRUs), Clemson, MUSC, and the University of South Carolina Columbia to compete for research funding to support the research clusters associated with MADE in SC.

Proposals submitted in response to this solicitation:

  • must be a collaboration between 2 investigators from Clemson, MUSC, and/or USC Columbia.
  • must be a research collaboration in 2 of the MADE in SC research clusters: MCC, Thrust 1, Thrust 2, and Thrust 3.
  • preferably, the collaboration is between a senior faculty member and a junior faculty member. Senior faculty members are those who are at the full professor level or who have been at the associate professor level for more than two years.

The goal of the GEAR Collaborative Research Program (GEAR CRP) is to encourage faculty researchers at the three SC CRUs and predominately undergraduate institutions (PUIs) to build collaborative CRU/PUI academic research teams that will compete effectively for research funding. GEAR CRP grants will be awarded to build and enhance the network of scientists in the state that will conduct research related to MADE in SC.

Proposals submitted in response to the solicitation:

  • must include two investigators with a senior faculty from a CRU and junior faculty from a PUI.
  • Preferably be a research collaboration in 2 of the MADE in SC research clusters: MCC, Thrust 1, Thrust 2, and Thrust 3.

The SAN Program aims to increase diversity in materials research and education with a goal of increasing diversity of the pipeline of Under Represented Minority (URM), women, and persons with disabilities pursuing and completing STEM degrees. To achieve this, the SAN Program provides 3 funding types.

Max Funding Amount Per Project: $10,000. Award Duration: 12 months.

Proposals may be submitted by a single PI from any SC college or university. Current SAN Awardees are eligible to apply for funding for a Program Type different from the one for which they are currently funded.

Congratulations to Fang Wang (Clemson, Materials Science and Engineering) who recently received a Young Researcher Poster Award, third place, at the 27th International Conference on Discrete Simulation of Fluid Dynamics. Wang received research support from MADE in SC.

News, Opportunities and Deadlines
SC Jr Academy of Science (SCJAS) will host its annual Fall Workshop for high school students and teachers on Saturday, November 10 at Columbia College. Any college faculty who are interested in hosting a hands-on session or HS teacher professional development session at the workshop should contact Marlee Marsh. Partial support for this workshop is provided through an EPSCoR Track 2 award (neuroscience), as well as MADE in SC (materials science). For more info, contact John Kaup.
Learn the aspects of writing a Small Business Innovation (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant including: history, eligibility, sources of funding and agency differences, understanding what reviewers look for and writing instructions. The 3Phase team specializes in assisting entrepreneurs to go beyond just the technical requirements. Three upcoming workshops:
NSF International Research Experiences for Students (IRES): Supports international research and research-related activities for US science and engineering students. Full proposal deadlines: Sept 11 (Track-I: IRES Sites), Sept 18 (Track-II: Adv’d Studies Institutes), Sept 25 (Track-III: New Concepts in Intern’l Grad Experience).
NSF Plant Genome Research Program (PGRP): Two funding opportunities available: RESEARCH-PGR TRACK: Genome-scale plant research to address fundamental biological questions in biology, including economically important processes of societal importance and TRTech-PGR TRACK: Tools, resources and technology breakthroughs that further enable functional plant genomics. Full proposals accepted anytime.
