Education & Workforce Development
ADAPT in SC’s education and workforce development activities support our research in AI-enabled biomedical devices through the development of an AI+ workforce that combines education in foundational areas such as conventional engineering with industry-relevant instruction in AI. Our plan incorporates each level of educational infrastructure in SC, from K–12 to postgraduate training, while engaging key industry partners.
ADAPT in SC’s education and workforce development objectives are to (1) build student/faculty development and career pathways in AI-connected jobs; (2) launch unique experiential learning opportunities to connect undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of disciplines to AI; (3) create innovative curricula and build research/human capacity; and (4) increase human capacity and broaden access to AI curricula for 225 middle school students and 800 HS students.
Education & Workforce Development Progress:
Recently, The Citadel ran its new AI, Algorithmic Integrity, and Autonomy Innovation Center (AI3C) middle school camp for girls. This AI+Healthcare+Humanoids culturally responsive camp is funded in part by the U.S. NSF EPSCoR award ADAPT in SC as an outreach activity in South Carolina to broaden participation in engineering and computing and to help improve healthcare. Led by Dr. Eva Singleton and co-taught with Dr. Oguzhan Oruc, the middle school students learned about topics that empower and encourage them as African American girls. Students from nearby schools like Charleston Charter School for Math and Science, Military Magnet Academy, and Sedgefield Middle School were involved in this effort.
ADAPT in SC’s education and workforce development activities led by Dr. Chris Korey, College of Charleston, supports research in AI-enabled biomedical devices through the development of an AI+ (artificial intelligence plus) workforce that combines education in foundational areas such as conventional engineering with industry-relevant instruction in AI. Our plan incorporates each level of SC’s educational infrastructure, from K–12 to postgraduate training, while engaging key industry partners. Several institutions (Benedict College, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Francis Marion University, South Carolina State University, and Winthrop University)affiliated with ADAPT in SC have already begun to implement modules relating to AI as well as developing courses on Data Science, AI, and Biosensors.
